Self-compassion involves extending the same loving, caring compassion we give to others in times of suffering and distress to ourselves. It is an important way of relating to and supporting ourselves that can protect us against experiencing poor mental health or reduced well-being in the face of life’s challenges.
Self-compassion is made up of 3 core components including:
- Self-Kindness – offering kindness and understanding to ourselves when we are in a place of pain or distress, rather than criticising and punishing ourselves for being upset
- Common Humanity – knowing that we are not alone in how we feel, and remembering that all human beings experience suffering sometimes; this is an experience that connects us to others
- Mindfulness – being able to accept and make space for our pain and suffering without becoming overwhelmed by it, or feeling like we need to run away and avoid it
Becoming more self-compassionate can be difficult, especially if our relationship to ourselves has been self-critical, judgmental, or harsh in the past. However, research tells us it is possible for everyone to cultivate a more self-compassionate stance towards themselves.
You can start to do this by exploring self-compassion practices and meditations such as:
- Taking a Self-Compassion Break
- Writing a self-compassionate letter to yourself
- Keeping a self-compassion journal
- Trying out guided self-compassion meditations which you can find online at websites like: https://self-compassion.org/
You could also join a Mindful Self-Compassion group program or connect with a supportive therapist who can walk with you on your self-compassion journey.
We all deserve to enjoy a nurturing, self-compassionate stance towards ourselves. The best time to start building one is now!
